The project currently underway follows on from the "Wolf Monitoring Program in the area of the Alto Minho I Wind Farm and the Wolf Research and Conservation Project in Northwest Portugal," which began in 2006.
The objective of monitoring the population and studying its ecology is to establish the necessary knowledge base for the effective and correct application of measures aimed at the conservation of this species.
The research methods and techniques outlined in this project will aim to obtain the following information:
- Annual estimate of wolf reproductive success and effective population size;
- Estimation of productivity and mortality;
- Analysis of the spatial organization of wolf packs;
- Determining the movements of wolves within pack territories;
- Location and characterization of activity centers associated with reproduction;
- Analysis of habitat connectivity and identification of dispersal corridors;
- Determining the rate, direction, and success of wolf dispersal;
- Determining concrete measures for wolf conservation.
The overall coordination of this project is the responsibility of ACHLI. The technical-scientific coordination and execution are the responsibility of the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the University of Porto (CIBIO-UP).
