Reforestation in the vacant lot of Candal, São Pedro do Sul

This tree planting was installed in 2010 in the wasteland of Coelheira, in the parish of Candal, São Pedro do Sul, Viseu, with the aim of creating small groves to benefit the wolf and its wild prey. It is part of the homogeneous sub-region of Terras Altas and Paiva of the PROF DL – Regional Forest Management Plan of Dão Lafões. The site is a mountainous terrain, covered mainly by spontaneous vegetation (heather, gorse, broom).

The land occupies a total area of 2 hectares. The forest species selected for planting in this area were cork oak (Quercus suber), Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica), birch (Betula celtiberica), and ash (Fraxinus angustifolia). Due to the presence of livestock in this location, and with the aim of increasing the success of the establishment of the young plants, we placed individual protectors as a means of protecting the young plants.
